A Review of the Unemployment - Economic Growth Nexus in Nigeria from 1980 to 2015: A Disaggregated Approach

The phenomenon of jobless growth in Nigeria recent years has called to question the Okun’s law that gross domestic product (GDP) reduces unemployment. This study therefore, analyses nexus between GDP and unemployment by disaggregating total output into its sectoral components analyze impact on using data from 1980 to-2015 employing econometric technique Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach. Two ARDL models were specified. first test revealed existence co integration growth. is positively related long run but a negative relationship was found short run. result disaggregated model (i.e second model) no agriculture, industry, construction, trade, services. We opined findings resulted disconnection aggregate demand supply productive sectors lack direct linkages oil sector other economy. recommends such should be forged through enhanced funding research development, technological innovation development value chain agriculture solid minerals output. Nigerians encouraged consume locally made products. Efforts intensified develop input contracts downstream industries sector.
